How long does it take to edit a Reel?

Editing a 30-second Reel looks like a five-minute job. If you’re not a practised editor, it often takes most of an hour. Here’s where the time goes.

Where the time goes

These are rough figures for someone who isn’t a professional editor, making a 30-second talking-head Reel in a phone app. They’re our estimates, not a study, and your numbers will vary.

Picking the best take: 5–10 minutes. Cutting pauses and stumbles: 10–20 minutes. Captions, including fixing the words they got wrong: 5–15 minutes. Adding product shots over cuts: 10–20 minutes. Music and levels: 5 minutes. Exporting, spotting a mistake and exporting again: 5–10 minutes.

That adds up to somewhere between 40 and 80 minutes for one video.

Why it adds up

None of the steps are hard. There are just a lot of them, and each one has a choice in it. Then the next video starts from zero. That’s why so many people say they’d post more if editing didn’t take so long.

How people who post every day keep up

They batch. They film once, edit several videos in one go, and reuse the same captions style, B-roll and music. Or they hand the edit to someone else.

Cutleap is that someone else. You upload the clips and type what you want. The first draft takes minutes and changes take seconds, so your part is closer to five minutes than fifty.

Try asking

“Make a 30-second Reel from this. Cut the pauses, add captions and music.”

“Make 5 Reels from this take, one point each.”

Questions

How long should a Reel be?

Most business Reels work at 15–45 seconds. Say one thing, say it well, and stop.

How often should I post?

Consistency matters more than volume. A few times a week, every week, beats a burst followed by silence.
